Translation Project

For this project, I reimagined Saint Sebastian from the Pinacoteca di Brera in a contemporary style. I chose to draw inspiration from Jenny Saville, as I admire her expressive, unrestrained approach to painting.

I found it challenging to replicate Saville’s large, gestural marks, as my own brushstrokes tended to be more controlled and contained. The images document my process. I began by applying a ground layer before experimenting with the proportions of the face until I was satisfied with the composition. I then used a flat brush to create bold, prominent marks, aiming to capture a sense of movement and texture.
